Profile writing documentation...?

Hey there. I recently developed an interest in writing profiles for the community, however, the documentation I'm able to find is pretty sparse and doesn't seem to cover a lot of what I would call basic functionality. Is the wiki the wrong place to be looking? Is there another area I should be looking in to find out all of the allowed elements, attributes, and parameters accepted in .xml profiles?
